PEN PORTRAITS OF OUR GOVERNORS

Brian Birch

"I was very honoured at being asked to become a governor at St Luke's Primary School.

I come with a substantial experience of education with a career spanning some 32 years, mainly in post 16 education. I began my teaching career in 1984 after gaining a full teaching qualification. My first experience of teaching wa overseas in the Far East, Brunei where I taught cabinet making. When I returned to England some three years later I taught at Cumbria College of Art and Design. Later I moved to London where I have taught mainly in various FE Colleges. My teaching career moved from being a full time teacher to a Head of Department then a Director of FE at The London College of Communication, part of the University of the Arts London. In my current post, I manage a very large and diverse adult education curriculum for a London Borough.

I am very active within my local church, St Peters Church in Streatham and am currently a church warden, a post I have held for 6 six years. I am also a member of the Local Parish Council, a encaustic minister, full member of the church serving team and act as MC on many occasions and the church Electoral Roll Officer.  I have been attending St Peters since 1988.

I am married and have three sons, who are all in full time education, one at University, one at an FE College and one at a local secondary school."

Nigel Gordon

"My name is Nigel Gordon and I am a Parent Governor at St Luke's.  I have three daughters; Sami, Chloe and Nyala.  My middle daughter, Chloe, currently attends St. Luke's School.  In addition to this, I live and work locally.

I take very seriously the role of a parent governor, partly because my children and I have a vested interest in the school.  Also, the school is excellent and I hope I can play a small part in Ofsted recognising the school as such.

Lastly, I will endeavour to represent the views of parents and helping to ensure the school is accountable to themselves, whilst they continue to provide excellent teaching to learners."

Ollie Clarke

"I live with my wife and young son in West Norwood. I moved to the area three years ago and started worshipping at All Saints.

I am a civil servant and have worked for the Department for Education since I left university 10 years ago.  In that time, I have worked on education law, secondary schools standards and children's social care. Most recently I have been on a secondment to the head office of United Learning, a large national chain of academies.

In my spare time, I play rugby and squash and go hiking, as well of course as spending lots of time with my family.

I'm really pleased to have an opportunity to become part of and make a contribution to the St Luke's family."

Donna Hanson"I am a qualified MFL teacher and have taught in two London Secondary Schools.  My last teaching position was Head of French in a school in Beckenham.   I am local, have two children who go to school locally and am a member of Christ Church Gipsy Hill."

Fahri Francis

"I am delighted to take up my first Governors role at St. Luke's C of E Primary School.  I am the Assistant Head Teacher and I enjoy the challenge that comes with every aspect of school life.  I have been a dedicated member of St Luke's team throughout its transition and enjoyed a number of fulfilling roles across the school.  I am passionate about young people achieve their potential through education and ensuring individual learners have the best opportunities to succeed whilst growing into responsible caring individuals.  I am really looking forward to continuing to work with the children, staff and families within the school community.

Rev Donald Davis

"I am the vicar at St. Luke's Church, in West Norwood.  I have been the vicar at St. Luke's since 2008 and therefore linked to the school since this time.  I am a father of 5 and grandfather to 8 grandchildren."

Winston Trotman

We welcome Winston as a new Governor and his pen portrait will be added shortly.

Angela Murray

“I am excited to take up a role as Governor at St Luke’s Primary School. I have a broad industry background and more recently my roles have been in charities and education.  I am currently a Governor and Treasurer at a charity. I hold FCCA and MBA qualifications.

I have a 7 year old active daughter who is a keen swimmer and gymnast. I too love keeping fit.

Streatham Baptist church has been my place of worship for a number of years. I seek to follow God’s direction for my life.

I have lived in West Norwood for a number of years. My youngest sister went to St Luke’s school, so it has a special place in my life.

I am pleased to be involved at St Luke’s and look forward to seeing it continue to reach its full potential.”

Claire McDermott

My child started St Luke's in April 2014, after missing the majority of reception year due to his complex medical needs we had found it difficult to find a school at the time that would accept him.  St Luke's have always and continue to be fully supportive of William's individuality with such a rare condition & he has grown spectacularly under their care.

I was fortunate to spend time within William's integration to school with the whole class & have therefore built a strong rapport with the now Year 5 parents.  I have become a familiar face within school to children, staff & parents over the last four years with an active role in Magic Breakfast most mornings. Over the last 4 years I have seen St Luke's steady improvement and have remained committed & passionate in supporting the school in its continued efforts to thrive.  It is important to build a stronger relationship between the school & parents, in order to move forward with the knowledge everyone's opinions are valued & heard appropriately and if agreed implemented.  I have the time & inspiration to support the school further.  I am keen to promote better communication between SLT, governors and parents.
