Celebration of Learning - July 2015

At the end of the school year, the school celebrated the children's achievements and hardwork. Each class invited parents into their classrooms to work with their child and their friends.  Here are a few examples of the workshops.

Year 1 designed and wrote special invitations to their parents to attend workshops.  The first workshop was a Maths Challenge where they worked in groups to find out whether each tube of Smarties contained the same amount of coloured Smarties in them.  For their Art Workshop, pupils in Sage Class studied the work of Roy Litchtenstein and created some super cool onomatopoeia pop art.  Their final workshop was Science.  They had to build hourse for the Three Little Pigs using different materials.  Then they had to test which house was the strongest and most durable.  They used a hairdryer to test whether the big bad wold would be able to blow down their houses.  They worked very hard, had a lot of fun and enjoying working with the parents.

In the Reception Class, parents were invited to a fruit session where pupils added together two numbers and then we worked out one more.  Parents looked at the pupils' special books and the children reflected on their learning this year.  They looked at their favourite piece of learning in each book and in what area the children have improved the most.

Year 4 had a wonderful RE / Philosophy for Children workshop in which, as part of our Creation topic, we used our critical thinking skills to discuss 'Who owns, and is the responsible for, Earth's natural resources?'.  In the afternoon, the classroom became a museum, sharing all the things we have been learning this half term.  Parents had the opportunity to make mosaics; guess what different Roman artefacts were used for; undertake an archaeological dig for Roman coins; create a model windmill; do some detective work to find out what plant or animal different fossils came from and investigate rocks and crystals.

After school, there was a celebration of the music our pupils had been learning which included our choir, Year 3 choir, pupils in Year 3 and 5 playing their ukuleles, steel pan performers adn Year 4 pupils playing violins and cellos.

“I think the Celebration of Learning is a great idea. It enables parents to liaise with staff members and children and see how the children work in class. Also it is an opportunity for parents to meet other parents and to enjoy the “Celebration” after school with the concert. “—Kiara, Kirell and Kacey’s mum.

“The Celebration of Learning is a wonderful idea that gives the children a chance to show off what they have learnt throughout the year and show their parents what they have learnt too. It helps the parents engage in their learning and also get an idea on strategies to teach their kids away from school. “- Ella, Lino and Mia’s mum

“The parents get the chance to see how the school teaches our children and the support that they receive and also to see their learning. As the sessions are spread throughout the day, if you have more than one child it gives you the opportunity to spend more time viewing their leanimg” — Tosan and Temisan’s mum.
